Don’t like the weather in Texas? Wait a few hours; it is sure to change. Unfortunately those quick seasonal weather changes often result in damaging storms. Actually Texas is one of the states that struggles with the highest number of weather related property damage year over year. So as storm season is upon us this season, we are best advised to be vigilant in our “pool storm preparation” habits.

Most pools these days, if properly installed, are already equipped with adequate overflow systems to drain excess water during rainstorms. If you choose to lower the level of the standing water in your pool prior to a large storm looming off the horizon, be forewarned that a little will go a long way. Too much water release can cause your pool to actually “rise” up out of the ground due to the increase in hydrostatic pressure. Two feet drop in the water level is the absolute maximum allowable to avoid creating other problems with your pool.

It is advisable to turn off the power to pool equipment via the circuit breaker as electrical storms most often cause damage to pool pumps and motors. If possible, you might even fully remove the motor altogether, to provide the most protection to your equipment overall.

When no one is using your pool it best to keep you pool cleaning equipment and pool play toys safely secured inside your garage or a pool shed or the like. This avoids the last minute scramble picking up items that might be thrown around in strong winds, causing damage to pool surfaces or even to your home’s windows and patio, fencing, arbors and so forth.

When all is said and done, call Tropix Pools to come out and recheck your pools chemical make-up, rebalance, and clean-up any debris. We are happy to fit you in our schedule!
