Spring is the time of year most of us are opening our swim pools in Allen, TX and a common question we receive from customers is “Why is my pool losing so much water?” . There are some ways you can narrow down the reasons behind your leaky swimming pool. Typically, it’s one of three issues with water loss:

  • Leaks in the swim pool plumbing
  • Leaks in the swimming pool shell
  • Excessive splash out or evaporation from the swimming pool

If you routinely need to add more than two inches of water to your pool per week, you may have a leak. Your pool will lose some water naturally to evaporation, some to splash out, and some to backwashing your filter.

Pool leak symptoms resulting from water loss

By far, the most common indication of a leak is that the water level is dropping faster than what is normally attributable to evaporation or splash out. Often, leaks are big enough that excess water loss is obvious. If you wake up to find that your pool has dropped several inches overnight, you know you’ve got a problem! The bigger challenges are the smaller, yet just as serious, leaks that may develop slowly. In these cases it is important to determine what is “normal water loss” and thus avoid wasting time looking for and worrying about a leak that really isn’t there.

To eliminate evaporation or splash out pool water loss as a cause, here is a quick test that can be run on your swimming pool:

  1. Place a 5 gallon bucket on the second step or bench seat and fill it with water so that it is exactly the same level as the swim pool.
  2. If evaporation is the cause of your loss, both levels should drop at the same rate.
  3. If the bucket drops faster, you probably have a thirsty dog – so be sure to secure all pets BEFORE the test.
  4. If you have a pool leak, then the pool will drop faster than the water level in the bucket.
