Many people get so excited when they get their first pool; selecting the tiles, the accents, the color of the finish, and all the other fun choices. They often make a selection based on what they like, or based on the pictures they are looking at online. Later, they will often question their pool company about why the pool color is not what they thought it would be.
If you were to take timed photos of your pool throughout the day, you would be very surprised at how different the pool color looks throughout the day, as the water will reflect the sun, the topiary surrounding the pool, and shadows that reflected on its surface. Even the tile accents you have chosen will affect pool color based on the time of day or early evening.
The color you have chosen as your finish will also effect the color of the water, but the depth will also change this. You will notice that the water at three feet will look different than at six feet, or by the steps or seating. You will especially notice this in black pools, where the colors can change from a golden tinge to a green color at the deeper end. The photos that you see online have been taken at a certain time of day, and will reflect what surrounds the pool.
When your pool is first started up, an acid wash is often used, and this will definitely influence the color of the finish of your pool. An aggressive acid wash will affect the pigment of the finish, and depending on how it is performed, it can lighten or darken the original color. Start up techniques affect scale, which also impacts the finish, which then affects the color you see. Scale consists of calcium carbonate or plaster dust, and when this builds up it will lighten the finish, which will also affect the color of your water.
When you want to see your pool at its best, choose a bright, sunny day. The color will reflect the sky above, and look most vibrant. Be aware that whatever surrounds your pool, if it is fencing, if the pool is set close to the house, patio furniture, or landscaping will all cast shadows at different times throughout the day. Keep these factors in mind before you begin to worry about the cleanliness of your pool.
